Hey You Kids Get Off My Lawn with Old Man Freakboy and Reverend Jim is an hour-long radio show that airs Sundays at 8 p.m. and Mondays at 11 p.m. on WPNR 90.7fm in Utica, NY, and live online.
heykidsGOML is aimed at 25-50 year-olds who grew up on punk and alternative rock and are now trying to be productive members of society without giving up their roots.
Broadcast from the campus of Utica College, WPNR reaches a 15-20 mile radius that encompasses the city of Utica and the surrounding suburbs of New Hartford, Whitesboro, Yorkville, New York Mills, and Oriskany. At any given point WPNR has a potential audience of 120,000 listeners.
First airing on July 15, 2012, Hey You Kids Get Off My Lawn was born out of the need of Old Man Freakboy and Reverend Jim, two married guys in their mid 30s with small children, to stay connected to music. The duo first met at Utica College in the mid 90s where they quickly went from hosting their own radio shows to completely running the station.
Despite currently being on opposite ends of the east coast, and fully engulfed in their suburban lifestyles, the old friends still find time to relive their glory days by playing an eclectic mix of old and new alternative, punk and metal.
In between the music, these non-conformist dads drop nuggets of wisdom on navigating adulthood and help school the younger generation in musical history. They are periodically joined by a colorful cast of characters from the cranky Uncle Pete to the nonsensical Cousin Randy, and also incorporate in-depth interviews with like-minded musicians and artists.
Old Man Freakboy is a husband to one, father to two, and leader of dozens on a mission to
save the world one song at a time. He seeks the security of pro
wrestling when he needs a break from the oncoming apocalypse.
Reverend Jim is reformed party animal who is married with two small boys and rapidly approaching 40. When he's not pretending to know how to fix things around the house or occupying his children with Netflix and Nintendo, he is annoying his wife by forcing her to watch sci-fi and horror movies, reading comic books, playing video games, listening to drone metal, and farting. He also often smells like garlic and onions. Or so he's told, since he was born without a sense of smell.
Cousin Randy is a backwoods savant who thinks everyone else are the ones who are backwards. "Y'ep!"
Uncle Pete is a highly motivated individual. That is, motivated by
getting things done so he can focus on the important things like video games, TV, drinking and complaining.
Joey Starr is a recent graduate of The GOML School of Radio
Announcing. Charming, confident and debonair; this underground rock Starr has
been there, done that and probably wrote the Cliff's notes on it. He has a lot
of bones to pick and the voice to do it!
